Playing chords on the guitar

What is a chord?

When you play three (or more) notes at the same time, You Are playing a chord.If you look into it, there seems to be zillions of chords.

But don’t panic. There’s no reason to get overwhelmed. Basically there are two categories; major and minor chords. A little simplified, all other chords spring from there.

So let’s say that you are just starting out playing chords on the guitar. You might wonder: Where do I start? In most cases, my advice would be:

Start with the basic ones. And by that I mean the open chords. They are much easier to play than barre chords, and if you just want to play “by the campfire” you will almost never need any other chords. So this is the perfect beginning.

Now, are any chords in particular better than others to start with? Not if you ask me, as You Can transpose the song from its original key to any other. So why not start with the easy ones? If you still want to sing the song in its original key you can use a capo.

Get yourself a chord chart. You can either find one online and print it out, or you can physically go out and buy one. Then, if you would limit yourself to learn only 4 chords as a start, I would suggest G, Em, C and D.

Why?

You’d be amazed if you knew how many songs you can play on those four chords. Thousands of them follows that specific order, over and over again, with few variations.

I started, More Than 30 years ago, playing chords on the guitar with “The Beatles Complete” as my Reference Book. I found it easier to learn the chords when I knew the song and how it was supposed to sound.

But I made a mistake…
